An excursion to Lago di Braies in South Tyrol
A journey to this lake in the Dolomites
Lago di Braies is located in the Fanes-Sennes-Braies nature park – a part of the Dolomites named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The lake is only an hour’s drive from our hotel in South Tyrol which means it is suitable for day trips.
A gem among the lakes in the Dolomites, it stands out due to its emerald-green colour, purity and freshness and in particular because of its special location. This lake came about through the creation of a reservoir dam, caused by a mudflow. But the words of the inhabitants in all the surrounding villages tells even more:
According to them Lago di Braies is the gateway to an underworld, a portal to the underground kingdom of Fanes. Ascent should be possible at the southern end of the lake, that is, at the foot of the mighty Seekofel (2810 metres), which is why the mountain also has the surname ‘Torberg’, or mountain at the gateway.
Lago di Braies is an ideal starting point for your hike – you have direct access to the Dolomite high altitude trail No. 1, which takes you through the surrounding mountains and promises you a wonderful view to the waters.
